Glossary of Terms
1-Mile Radius Search
Users are able
to examine shrink averages, shrink distributions, and security measure
utilization within a 1-mile radius of an address or point. This search includes
all NSD retail locations within the 1-mile radius. The same results can be
viewed for retail categories as long as a sufficient number of stores from the
selected category are available within the search area.
Alarm System
Alarm Systems are designed to provide notification of an intrusion into a protected structure. The alarm system must be active in order to qualify.
Analog Video Recording
An Analog Video Recording System records and stores video information primarily to videotape for later playback on a VCR.
Average
A value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of figures by the number of figures.
Example: In the National Shrink Database, shrink values are averaged for a given search area or retail category. If there are ten stores in a search, then the average shrink is computed by summing the ten shrink values and then dividing by ten.
Customer Bag Check System
A Customer Bag Check System is a method of preventing and detecting shoplifting in which
patrons are either required to check their bags/purses at the door or allow employees
to inspect bags upon exit of the store.
Break-In Barriers
Break-in Barriers provide perimeter security for the store's exterior with the goal
of preventing drive-thru break-ins. Some examples include concrete barricades and
anti-ram bollards.
Burglary Smoke Deterrence
A Burglary Smoke Deterrence System emits a cloud of smoke throughout the store in
the event of an intrusion or break-in.
CCTV System
A Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) System uses video cameras to monitor the behavior
of store patrons either continuously or intermittently. The presence of a CCTV System
can be used as a detection, deterrence, or post-incident investigative tool. The
camera system must be active to qualify.
Courier Service
A Courier Service, also known as Armored Car Service, provides secure transportation
and delivery of cash or other valuables.
Decile
Deciles divide a dataset into ten equal parts. Figures are sorted in ascending order.
The 1st decile contains the lowest 10% of values and the 10th decile includes the
highest 10% of values.
In the National Shrink Database, deciles are used to create the Shrink Distribution
Chart.
Digital Video Recording
A Digital Video Recording (DVR) System captures a CCTV System's recordings on digital
formats such as disk drives, memory cards, or other digital memory media.
EAS System
Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) is a method of preventing or deterring shoplifting
through the use of sensor tags and a detection system. If a person attempts to exit
the store with a tag still attached to an item, an alarm or notification system
is triggered.
Gate Protection
Security Gates are designed to provide a store with protection against "smash and
grabs" and break-ins. A protective gate on the mall or shopping center’s exterior
does not qualify.
Greeters
Store Greeters are employees or non-guard personnel who welcome or assist patrons
upon entry of the store and often serve to deter shoplifting.
Guard Service
A store is considered to have Guard Service when there is a full- or part-time guard
within the store itself. The presence of a seasonal or mall/shopping center guard
does not qualify as guard service.
In-store LP personnel
In-store LP Personnel can be detectives or other loss prevention managers who work
within the store on a regular basis in order to prevent or detect shrink and loss.
Intelligent Video
An Intelligent Video System automatically captures and analyzes specific events
that have been programmed to trigger an analysis. Some examples include motion detection,
camera tampering, people counting, and facial, product or other digital recognition.
Networked Video
A Networked Video System is a CCTV System that transmits images and signals over
a network connection in order to provide remote access to a store's video surveillance.
Non-EAS Tagging/Cables
Non-EAS Protection can come in the form of non-active tags, ink tags, or cables
that are affixed to merchandise in order to prevent or deter shoplifting.
Percentile
VA value below which a certain percentage of observations fall.
Example: In the National Shrink Database, percentile indicates how high or low a
location’s shrink is in comparison to the other sites in a retailer’s portfolio.
For instance, if a store is at the 90th percentile, it means that 90% of the retailer’s
other stores have shrink lower than that of this particular location.
Quartiles
Quartiles divide a dataset into four equal parts. Figures are sorted in ascending
order. The first quartile contains the lowest 25% of values, the second quartile
holds the following 25% of values, the third quartile includes the next highest
25% of values, and the fourth quartile contains the highest 25% of values.
In the National Shrink Database, states are assigned to quartiles based upon their
average shrink values.
Retail Category
Members are assigned to a maximum of two main categories (e.g. ‘Apparel’ or ‘Jewelry/Accessories/Eyewear’)
and two subcategories, (e.g. ‘Women’s Apparel’ or ‘Jewelry/Watches’). Users are
able to examine shrink by retail category or subcategory as long as a sufficient
number of stores from the given category or subcategory are available within the
search area. As the membership grows, the number of categories and subcategories
will continue to expand.
Retail Location Summary
Retail locations are displayed based on the individual user’s viewing rights and
account access. The application allows the users to compare shrink at their individual
locations to the average value for all participants in a given search area.
Security Measures
The eighteen security measures displayed within the National Shrink Database are
frequently used within the retail industry to protect assets and decrease shrink.
Shrink Average Chart
The Shrink Average approach takes stores within the selected search criteria and
averages their shrink, thus providing a means to determine if the average shrink
is relatively high or low compared to the entire database. As a sole criterion of
analysis, this index can lead to biased conclusions as it does not take into account
the large differences in shrink distribution that exist from chain to chain. For
example, all stores within a search may be generated from chains with high shrink
which could skew the averages upward.
Shrink Distribution Chart
Using this approach, we recognize that shrink levels can vary markedly from one
retail chain to another. We examine whether the stores within a search reside at
the bottom, middle, or top of their companies’ shrink distributions. In this chart,
the number of stores that fall within each decile of their respective companies’
shrink distributions is generated. The more stores that are in the highest deciles,
the higher the shrink is in that area. The higher the concentration of stores that
fall within the lowest deciles, the lower the shrink is in that area. A uniform
distribution of stores across the 10 deciles or a cluster of locations in the middle
deciles indicates an average shrink area.
Store Search
Users are able to examine a specific store’s shrink and its percentile across all
locations within the company. A store’s security measures, shrink average, and shrink
distribution are also displayed. The individual stores displayed within the search
are locations belonging to your company only, not those of other NSD participants.
Summary Information
The information displayed below uses the shrink average approach, which selects
the stores that meet the current search criteria and displays the number of participants,
their average shrink and average percentile. This information provides
a method of determining if the average shrink is relatively high or low. As a sole
criterion of analysis, this index can lead to biased conclusions as it does not
take into account the large differences in shrink distribution that exist from chain
to chain. For example, all stores in a search may be generated from chains with
high shrink which could skew the averages upward.
Virtual/Interactive Video
A Virtual or Interactive CCTV System is a remotely monitored surveillance tool that
detects certain store activities and triggers a pre-programmed response in order
to prevent or deter those events.
Window Treatment Protection
Window Treatment Protection represents any type of treatment or measure that has
been taken in order to protect a store's windows from break-ins or shattering.
ZIP Code Search
Users are able to examine shrink averages, shrink distributions, and security measure
utilization within a desired ZIP code. This search includes all NSD retail locations
within the selected ZIP code. The same results can be viewed for retail categories
as long as a sufficient number of stores from the selected category are available
within the search area.
